Monitor Audio has polished its gold, new shiny 6-generation Gold series are here.
Dear reader, I am happy to let you know that Monitor Audio has polished its gold, launching a shinier new Gold 6-generation speakers. The new series comes with new drivers (new cone technology) and, of course, a new design. At first you may notice that the new 6-generation is available in the same color options as the 5-generation, but the finishes look a little bit more matte than the previous glossy renditions. At least this is what the pictures tell us. Of course, we need a reality check for the looks and, of course, for the sound.
Here are all the options in the series:
The series ranges from the small sized bookshelves 50 6G, the bigger bookshelves 100 6G, some slim on-walls called the On-Wall 6G, the regular sized stand floors 300 6G, the bigger stand floors 500 6G and a center, the C250 6G.
Comparing the new series’ lineup with the previous 5G series, there is the same home-theater focus as before, having bookshelves and surround speakers available. In the bookshelves category we now have two options, the new entry being the smaller 50 6G, which didn’t exist in the previous series. But also, the novelty comes with some new On-Wall 6G set of speakers that replaces the previous Gold FX. The latter was a speaker specifically designed for rear positioning in a multi-channel setup, with a special architecture, the same as in the case of FX Bronze series. The new On-Wall 6G is not tilted anymore, being just a plain slim speaker that can be mounted straight on a wall. This adds further configuration liberty, as it can be used also for front installations. Below you can see the On-Wall 6G taking the center stage, being used as fronts and center speakers in a very minimalist and slim configuration.
Now, coming back to finishes, here is the “brown” finish of the new 6G series, called “Macassar”, as you can see it is a reddish type of matte finish that looks very cool and mid-century oriented:
Here is the old “brown” finish of the 5G series, it was called the “Piano Ebony”, being a glossy more vibrant finish:
I can tell you from experience that this Piano Ebony was one of the best finishes I have ever seen, being deep and glossy. The old 5G series were available also in a Dark Walnut finish that is not available anymore for the new 6G series, and somehow the new Macassar finish is a mediation between the Dark Walnut and Piano Ebony of before. I can’t wait to propel my eyes on the new Macassar finish! The veneer used for the series is completely man-made, thus Monitor Audio is promising that a smaller carbon footprint was used in making these speakers.
Coming back to the technology behind the new 6-generation, the new metal cone technology is called Diaphragm Technology (HDT), coming from the high-end Hyphn series and Platinum series. The HDT cone makes use of a hexagonal pattern to disrupt the symmetries. Of course, C-CAM technology is also present, which prevents listening fatigue. Also, we have a new transducer technology called MPD III (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) – this is a technology that puts a big advantage on the delivery of high frequencies.
The speakers are already available with prices ranging from Gold 500 6G: $7000, Gold 300 6G: $5250, Gold 100 6G: $4000, Gold 50 6G: $2250, Gold C250 6G: $2250 and Gold On-Wall 6G: $1350.
